Verbs Followed by "A" plus the Infinitive

(Same Subject)

Many verbs can be followed by a verb in the infinitive, when there is only one subject for both verbs. In some cases, this infinitive must be preceded by the preposition A, e.g. andare a ballare (go dancing).

As far as pronunciation is concerned, note that "a" causes the so-called "syntactic doubling", i.e. the initial consonant of the following word is pronounced as a double consonant. If the following word starts, "a" changes to "ad", e.g.: andare ad allenarsi.

Please note that some of these verbs may require a different preposition when used with a different meaning or when followed by a noun.
