Change
of the thematic vowel from closed to open
L'ACCENTO
The vowels "e" or "o" of the verb root are always closed if they are not
accented in the infinitive. When the accent, in the verb conjugation, falls on
the root vowel, it is possible that the pronunciation of "e" or
"o" becomes open. The following list has the purpose to attract the
student attention on this problem and to supply some useful examples. We could
add new entries to the list from time to time and can be useful to return every so often to this page.
For the position of the accent in verb conjugation, see Accent
repositioning. The problems concerning verb form pronunciation are presented
with tables and examples in the book Le coniugazioni chiave.
For an alphabetical list of irregular, old, literary verb forms see the first book
of the series Nel labirinto dei verbi titled La ricerca dell'infinito
To practice verb forms see the tape series ORAL DRILLS ON ITALIAN VERBS.
